6 Ways to Pay It Forward This Holiday Season

Tis the season to pay it forward and put a smile on someone’s face. We’re talking about different ways to pay it forward this holiday season today!

Ways to Pay it Forward

Paying it forward with day-to-day things are always appreciated, but if you could help someone out or turn someone’s day around just in time for the holidays, then why wouldn’t you!? Here are a few things that could make an impact on someone’s day, week or even their entire holiday.

SHARE A WARM DRINK OR COFFEE

Throughout the holiday season Starbucks tends to do a “buy one get one” or their holiday stamp card for a free drink in the afternoons. Take them up on this opportunity! Take that extra coffee or whatever it is along with you to your next destination. Handing a warm drink off to a homeless person, the crossing guard, the woman working at the dry cleaners, is such a simple (and free) way to make someone’s day.

DONATE FOOD + CLOTHES

It’s the perfect time of year to clean out your pantry. You’re likely digging way into the back to find those thanksgiving seasonings that we only use this time of year, so while you’re in there why not take out the items that you are never going to use and donate them to your local food bank? This time of year gets so busy at the food banks! They could use any extra they can get to keep up with the demand.

Same with your clothing, when you dig way back to find that sweater you only ever wear during this holiday season, collect all of that other clothing you never touch and donate it! Not only will it be going to a good cause, you’ll be making your house a cleaner, more organized place!

TIP A LITTLE EXTRA

An extra dollar or two won’t break your bank but it may make someone’s entire holiday season. I always try to tip a little extra during the holidays for services I regularly get, like my nails and hair. They’re the people that you form relationships with whether you realize it or not. That little bit extra will not go unnoticed.

On that note, TIP YOUR POSTMAN! I don’t know if this is just something my mom did when I was growing up but those who deliver your mail deserve a little extra this time of year. Especially if you’re an Amazon Prime member your postman is hustling to get you the things you order this time of year. They’re losing out on time they could be spending with their families especially during the holiday season as so many gifts are being mailed across the country.

BRING TREATS TO THE OFFICE

Such a simple way to brighten your coworkers days. I’m lucky because I get to go home for multiple holidays during this time of year but the majority of my peers in different work places have to choose which one they want to take their time off to travel home for. So if your coworkers have family in another state and they have to choose which of the holidays they go home for, bringing treats into the office reminds them that they don’t have to feel lonely during this time of year.

THANKING YOUR LOCAL SERVICE MEN + WOMEN

Thank a police officer or firefighter the next time you see them. The service men and women like police officers and firefighters are the people that will be working extra-long hours this holiday season, taking time away from their loved ones to ensure you safely get to spend time with yours. They often go unnoticed and honestly deserve to be thanked, so try to remember that simple, but important task, especially throughout the holiday season.

SNAIL MAIL

And, last but not least, my favorite thing to do throughout the holiday season to make people really know you care is to handwrite them thank-you cards. The world is lacking that gracious human interaction nowadays and receiving a handwritten card in the mail is so simple but so meaningful. People really do take the time to give the gifts they think you will love and writing personalized thank-you cards, acknowledging the time and thought put into your gifts is a lot more meaningful than a quick “thanks!” or a generic Facebook post. Grab a box of thank-you cards from the sale section at HomeGoods and you’re good to go for the season!

And if you want to do more than just pay it forward or donate, we’ll be compiling a handful of our favorite gifts that give back so you can shop for the holidays with a purpose this year. Stay tuned!
