A trend is something that is current and popular… and usually everyone is talking about it. Design trends are very similar to fashion trends in the sense that they are typically made popular by well know tastemakers in the industry. And much like others, I like to keep up with what’s current in the design industry by reading magazines, blogs, watching tv shows, and other videos online.
As much as trends can come and go very quickly, I think the design world has had a few great trends that have stuck recently and some can be timeless if they’re done the right way. Im excited to share some of my trend predictions for 2017 today… so grab some coffee and settle in because these seven design trends are worth the read! I’d love to hear your thoughts too! Do you love them? Hate them? Which trend are you on board with?
1. Neutral Bedding (take advantage of the white sales!)
Neutral bedding is one of those trends that you really can’t go wrong with. Personally, crisp white bedding is one of my must haves. Your bedroom is the place where you’re supposed to relax and recharge- there’s no better way than with a neutral or white spa-like atmosphere! Not everything has to be white though. Add some wood accents or a pop of color with an upholstered headboard. And don’t be afraid of white bed linens because there’s always bleach!
Plants are a great way to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside and keep your home feeling alive and welcoming. Faux or real doesn’t necessarily matter unless you’re looking for a plant that has air purifying benefits- if you’re like me and have a hard track record with keeping a real plant alive, try out a faux plant or two.
3. Wood Tones
Mixing wood tones used to be a huge no-no. I remember growing up where it was an unspoken rule that everything had to match and act as a collection of sorts. I love that its now almost recommended that you mix and match items like wood furniture, baskets, and wood finishes.
Ahh wallpaper… another trend that went from being BIG to taking an even bigger flop and being frowned upon for a while. But it’s back and nothing to be afraid of! There’s all kinds of wallpaper these days including temporary and removable wallpaper if you’re in a rental or are unsure how long you’ll keep it for. Wallpapers with oversized patterns, florals, and funky almost 70’s style patterns are huge right now.
5. Mixing Patterns & Textures
Mixing patterns is a trend thats becoming more and more popular but doesn’t seem to be easy for most people. This is probably the most nerve wracking to tackle. I’ve heard from so many people that they love it when they see it but they could never put something together on their own- my tip is to play with patterns right in the store! Don’t be afraid to pull those pillows off the shelf and set them up on the ground or on a chair and take photos of a few different looks. It’s easier to see it and play with patterns than imagine it in your head in most cases!
6. Gallery Walls
Gallery walls are everywhere right now! And I don’t see them going out of style anytime soon. There’s so many different variations of a gallery wall that there’s really no wrong way to put together a gallery wall. It’s meant to look scattered unless you’re intentional about your spacing and following a pattern. My pro tip is to tape your wall space out on the floor and pre-plan your layout!
7. Marble Accents
And Lastly, the marble trend that’s so popular right now! I see marble everywhere these days. I’m loving everything marble and I could decorate an entire house with it if someone let me however, I could not stress enough on how important it is to know about marble and how it reacts to different elements as a natural stone. As long as you do your homework on marble, then I say go for it! If you’re looking for a marble countertop or tile but you are nervous… there are a ton of marble substitutes out right now that are great options.
